Bilge Festival

Bio

After their highly acclaimed Cape Goat debut album in 1994 on Wildside Records, Bilge Festival released the album The Shrimp Boats in 1996. The album contains their 1995 single Pave It Over and popular student radio tracks Gut and Rinse Victim.

With their mini-album Cape Goat, Bilge Festival created two popular videos He's The Mummy and the NZ Video Awards winner Wildebeast A Go Go. Bilge Festival’s single Pave It Over gained a NZ On Air Radio Airplay Grant for achieving high rotate on Dunedin’s 93 Rox.

The Shrimp Boats album is according to Bilge Festival: “A bigger and better baby, possibly more lovely, probably more twisted.” There’s the frenetic Bilge style of She Wrecked My Hand, the twisted A Framer and Bedspread, the dark absurdity of Hairspray, the chugged out groove of The Foaming and the stark lyrics and vocals of Rash, Bomb Site Supreme and Shaver Now.

The Shrimp Boats is a diverse album with a range of sounds and a destination in mind. The band’s Mark Lederman (and album cover artist) says, ”We spent a while on the track order so that rather than a random bunch of 12 songs they have some cohesion and relationship to each other as the album progresses.”

The album was recorded at Ebor St and Arthur St (Wellington), produced by the band and mixed by the inimitable Nick Roughan (former Skeptics member; HLAH / David Kilgour / Superette producer; Shihad soundman etc) at Zoo Studios, Hamilton.

The album title is derived from the foreign shrimp boats that were tied up in Wellington Harbour for most of 1995. The band see the album as like “a fleet of songs and like all good foreign fishing vessels and their crew, they can be sometimes difficult to understand, good for bludging ciggies off and smellier, the closer you get.”

Peter has also performed with Poultice.
