Awesome Reviews For 'Longplayer'!
Posted: Thu Aug 1, 2002 9:46 am
Pine's album Longplayer has been getting plenty of excellent reviews, including 5 stars (*****) by Nick Gormack in the Christchurch Press, 4 stars (****) by Russell Baillie in the NZ Herald, even the hardman of NZ and Real Groove reviewing - Duncan Greive - had a few favourable words to say ("This is an extremely accomplished debut.")... some of the reviews are below.

K-Lee also said that Pine "will go far" in the last issue of Pavement.

Pine are just getting themselves together to make a new video for the track 'Mystery' taken from 'Longplayer', while the last one was popular for it's wet t-shirt action, this next one will involve band kissing action.

CHRISTCHURCH PRESS REVIEW - SAT 06 JUL 02:

Nick Gormack ***** 5/5

With their sweet, well crafted pop melodies, Pine show you don't need studio trickery or sonic effects to produce a great sound. This is the debut album from the Christchurch 3 piece, who impressed with last years 'Speeding' EP. 'Longplayer' continues in that vein with 12 new tracks, plus a remastered version of the upbeat 'Make Way For The King'. While their music has echos of other artists, Pine produce their own sound, uncluttered and uncomplicated.

Hannah Beehre floating keyboards, Aaron Beehre driving, beguilint guitar lines and Stephen McCarthy's clear, strong vocals combine in just the right mix. Hightlights include 'Wanted Boy', 'Cried All Night', 'Mystery', 'Silence Is A Sin', 'Days On End' and the recent single 'Beaten Again'. But they're all good. Pop - in the best sense of the word - it's the sort of music you could listen to any time of the day.

NZ HERALD - SAT 27 JUL 02:

Russell Baillie **** 4/5

"Meet me in the sunroom" Christchurch's Pine sing wistfully on the final song of this, their debut album.

It's an invitation that's hard to refuse, given Pine's quietly engrossing collection of dreamy tunes, hushed harmonies, thoughtfully strummed and jangled guitars, gently splashed drums and occasional keyboards which turn this into one sweet, hazy pop mood.

The sound from the trio of Stephen McCarthy and Hannah and Aaron Beehre suggets they're part of a Canterbury pop lineage extending back to The Bats via Stereo Bus. The 13 songs also have echos of Brits such as The Stone Roses (on the gently pastoral 'Had One' and 'Days On End'.) or Belle and Sebastian (especially on the gently hypnotic 'Sugar' and the hushed folk-pop of 'Lazy Tracey'.)

Assembled with a craft and restraint that reveals its details on repeat listens, 'Longplayer' soon becomes one of those albums best experienced from the comforts of your favourite couch. Yes, they put the Pine in supine. Horizontally recommended.

SMOKECDS REVIEW:

The first full length effort from stripped back Christchurch trio Pine delivers 13 tracks of understated pop beauty. The sparse arrangements and contagious melodies make 'Longplayer' another essential purchase for any fan of clever songs and laid back grooves.

'Longplayer' was recorded by Ryan Beehre (of Minuit fame) and mixed by Nick Abbott with impressive results - the production of the record captures the delicate nature of Pine's quietest moments, while conveying the subtle tonal qualities of the songs.

With a simple line-up consisting of keyboard, guitar and drums, Pine succeed in creating a refreshing sound which will see you making many return visits to this solid debut album.
