Jason Cavus

Bio

Jason Cavus is an Auckland artist/producer with a lifetime passion for music.

“I love that real slippery, twangy feel of a brand new set of guitar strings. I love a good meaty 808 kick. I love working away solo in the middle of the night, tweaking dials and faders. I love that little rush of nerves when you walk out on stage, or when you play a brand new track to someone for the first time. I love watching their face to try work out what they’re thinking about it...”

Learning a variety of instruments from a young age enabled Jason to become heavily involved in a broad range of musical groups, beginning his musical career in high school. From the Rockquest Finals, to Jazz Big Bands, Blues groups, Metal bands and performing solo, Jason has found enjoyment in a wide range of music genres and experiences.

This is clearly evident in his style today, which includes releases in genres ranging from drum n bass, to hard-hitting rock, acoustic blues, electronica and hip hop.

Jason’s musical diversity may stem from the fact that he was fortunate enough to set foot on every continent on the planet by the age of twelve. He spent his childhood living in Kenya, and seeing the world remains an important part of his life. This diverse background is reflected in his music, where he is open to a wide range of influences, and enjoys the flexibility of crossing between many genres.

Having graduated with a Masters in Sound Recording and Music Production from Auckland University; he not only writes his own songs and plays all the instruments, he also records, mixes, and masters all of the tracks too.

Jason can essentially be called an ‘eclectic musician’; in the sense that his talents range across the many facets that Music can be divided into. A natural musician with disciplined technique, a gifted producer with an ear for mixing and a confident and poetic lyricist- Jason’s ability encompasses it all.

Jason is a man with many strings to his musical bow, a man with a relentless enthusiasm for sound and with a need to pass this passion on to others. “That’s where the passion lies for me, trying to pass the impact music has on me, onto other people. Whether it be writing music, performing music, producing my own or other peoples music, or even just playing people music I love on an ipod.”

Perhaps this is why he can be found lecturing in Music Technology at Auckland University, if he is not engineering projects for artists such as Sola Rosa and the Tom Ludvigson Jazz Trio. Engineering music has become an addiction for Jason and he finds himself ‘pulling apart’ and ‘breaking down’ every song that his trained ear listens to. “It seems so silly from a bigger picture kinda view, all these little notes and sounds and beats and bars. But music is everywhere, it affects pretty much everyone in some way. It really affects me.”

When he’s not in the studio, you’ll find him at the beach or up the mountain, Jason is a sponsored snowboarder, a keen surfer and has parted his time between his home on the North Shore, and the snowy peaks of Tahoe.
