Gramsci

Bio

Paul McLaney's debut album 'Permanence' is the result of a year of self-imposed musical reassessment and experimentation.

After starting his musical career in Dunedin, McLaney released 'Pedestrian' in 1997 and 'The Prayer Engine' in 1998. Now operating under new moniker Gramsci, McLaney has hooked up with local producer David Holmes to create an album that stems from folk rock roots. His sound is reminiscent of early 70's renegade Nick Drake, recent D.I.Y guy David Gray, even a little Brian Ferry, but he also lets technology eat away at the edges, with beeps and loops invading his sound to create a greater sense of space.

From the rolling, throwaway mantra of first single 'Easy To The Ethereal', confessional Masonry Angels, McLaney has fulfilled a promise that his earlier work suggested. It's stopping music lovers in their steps to take a harder, longer look.

Gramsci’s follow-up album, 'Object', released in 2002, has also received excellent reviews.

The name Gramsci is taken from an infamous Italian political philosopher.

Gramsci return to the live scene this Saturday
Posted: Tue Oct 26, 2004 8:33 am
SEE THE NEW GRAMSCI LINE-UP PERFORM THIS SATURDAY 30TH OCTOBER AT THE AMBASSADOR THEATRE, PT CHEVALIER

Gramsci have been in the studio most of this year, recording the album 'Like Stray Voltage', which is scheduled for release in early 2005.

The album will show a much rockier side to Gramsci that may not have been apparent in predecessors 'Object', 'Permanence' and frontman Paul McLaney's solo effort 'The Shadows of Birds Flying Fall Slowly Down the Tall Buildings'.

This rock-infused Gramsci, featuring McLaney and longtime collaborator David Holmes along with newcomers Mareea Paterson (Veruca Salt, Tim Finn) on bass and Jasper De Roos (Meterman) or drums, will unleash their new material this Saturday, October 30th at Pt Chevalier's Ambassador Theatre.

That's right - the Ambassador Theatre, not just the little room in the front - expect a rowdy night in an amazing environment, with a spectacular light show and huge sound.

Gramsci will be supported by Kahu and The Fanatics. Doors open at 8.30pm. Limited tickets are available from Real Groovy.

Don't miss the live return of Gramsci this Saturday October 30th at the Ambassador Theatre, Pt Chevalier.

Paul McLaney aka Gramsci has headed into the fabled Abbey Rd Studio with NZ engineer Nick Abbot (Goldenhorse, The Datsuns, Meterman) and legendary studio guy Phill Brown (Mark Hollis, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Kristin Hersch etc...) to record tracks for his solo album to be released later this year. NZ film-maker Mark Swadell is also on hand to film the auspicious session for a future doco.
