Tommy is a New Zealand band that has released two albums through Loop Recordings Aot(ear)oa.
Described as Folk-Rock Reggae, the lyrical band blends elements of many music styles including Alt-country, Indie-Pop, Dub, Hip Hop, Funk and Bluegrass.
The band orbits around singer-songwriter Tommy Benefield and features Paul Pascoe on keyboards, Stuart Clarke (since 05) on Lead Guitar and AJ and Iain Hickling on drums and bass. The first record ‘4000 Years’ was released in November 2005 to much critical acclaim within the New Zealand Music and Media Scenes. There second (and what will be there last album together) is to be released in March 2007.
Tommy became renowned in the NZ Music Scene for their highly energetic and uplifting live shows and their poignant and evocative lyrics.
With Audible Pin-Dropping silence surrounding aching, beautiful ballads, uproarious skanking and flamboyant dexterous Dance madness to the reggae and dub numbers, banter and story telling that has the audience laughing hysterically and feeling like the whole concerts just family, TOMMY integrate as much of their heart and spirit into their performances as is humanly possible.
Tommy have headlined and performed at many of the big NZ festivals; Destinations, The Gathering, Convergence, Rhythm and the Vines, Aotea Square New Years Eve, Whooper Chopper, Cuba St Carnival, Resolutions, Visions etc and have opened for, and played along side, many well known national and international acts such as Donovan Frankenreiter, The John Butler Trio, TrinityRoots, The Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop, Minuit, Kora, One Million Dollars, The Phoenix Foundation, Odessa, Deva Mahal, Hollie Smith and Rhombus etc
The upcoming album titled ‘Tomorrow I Might Go’ will be released alongside a multidimensional heartfelt documentary which tells the story of the album and the bands decision to part ways.
Tommy will be touring ‘Tomorrow I Might Go’ extensively throughout 2007 before disbanding.
Tommy Benefield will continue touring and performing Tommy songs with his new indie-pop, alt-rock band Tommy And The Fallen Horses.
Tommy And The Fallen Horses are halfway through finishing their debut album with celebrated NZ producer Nick MacGowan.
