Anika Moa

Bio

As the seasons change, the air gets warmer, and birds begin to arrive back from the north, Anika Moa returns with her third and most complete album to date, 'In Swings The Tide'. Released on October 8th, 2007 through EMI records, those who know Anika will be further intrigued, those who have not yet come across this 27 year old singer songwriter, soon will.

There isn’t a voice like hers anywhere. Honest and heart wrenching with an underlying soul and energy that complements the songs she writes. You may have seen the cheeky grin. It gives a small insight into the persona behind it, and the music she has made for the best part of the last decade.

'In Swings The Tide' is her latest offering. It takes one listen through to realise it is an album that she has poured all of her creative energies into. Featuring the new single 'Dreams In My Head', the sound of Anika Moa is the sound of one of New Zealand’s best loved troubadours, and one who speaks from the truth of her experiences.

Recorded at Anika’s Auckland home in 2006 seven days before Christmas and ten days later on in May 2007, the sessions were originally planned as a chance for Anika to record some demos. But in swung the tide and things changed, even down to Anika self producing her own album for the first time.

Anika engaged her favourite live musicians, including drummer Nick Gaffeney, Chip Matthews on bass, keyboardist Steph Brown and guitarist Neil Watson for the album sessions. Tim Guy and Anna Coddington add backing vocals to a number of songs. Adding a new dimension to the album, colleague and friend, Bruce Lynch (Cat Stevens) was called in to arrange orchestral parts for the album. The scores were realised by members of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra at Eden Post Audio.

Although her trademark sound is still apparent, and that beautiful voice as present as ever, the flavour of her songs have evolved. A mixture of pop sensibilities with a country swing and spring amongst her wondrous melodies, the music speaks for itself.

Like in the words of her own song ‘this year has been hard’, from the smile on her dial you couldn’t tell a thing. Love comes and goes, seasons pass, and just after it has gone out again, 'In Swings The Tide'.

hi there,

I don't know if Anika ever reads this page, but I wanted to say I saw her interview on JuiceTV a while ago and wrote this poem (I write poetry Blue Razz ) while I was watching. It's about a place called Oaro, on the Kaikoura coast of the south island, where we have a bach. We've gone there for holidays ever since I was a child.

cheers,
Rae

My Light

Could I take your hand?
In my mind the skin feels
uh
too close

walk with me
there is this fence
one two three …
five strand wire
and sheep

amidst the sunlit grass
blade by blade step through
step uh
how the hillside climbs
away in rolls and slides
little tracks and shelves
where the sheep trail
little feet climb

from the top
the Maori cem e te ry
hushes your mouth gaze
out to the glass horizon
where the whales boom

I want to show you
the sea wall,
the tiny huts two beds bunks
outside dunny

and the wood pigeon
carrying the sound of five hundred
journeys in each wingbeat
downstroke
fat with plums

show you the cut cross
clean above the salt bones of driftwood
sparking up the dark

take my hand
I'll try not to mind
how close you are

see the morning rise?
This is mine.

Thanks to Median Strip for the following:

Anika Moa has played the length and breadth of New Zealand, she's even done Aussie, bits of the US and a few European shows - but now she's hitting the big time - Helensville.

Anika and band have chosen West Auckland's Helensvill Grand Hotel to showcase new material written over the last couple of months. She'll be performing this Friday (May 30) and Saturday (May 31). More information about these gigs can be found on the muzic.net.nz gig guide.

Her new album is expected early next year.

Anika Moa, James Reid Tour Cancelled
Posted: Sat Aug 31, 2002 6:10 pm
UNFORESEEN circumstances - that was the official explanation given by their publicists for why the national tour by Anika Moa and solo Feeler James Reid has been cancelled.

Specifically, Reid\'s band had extended their promotional jaunt in Britain and the US, meaning he just couldn\'t make the 23 dates due to start this Tuesday in Putaruru which had been booked since the beginning of August.

Well, no, not quite. The decision to pull the tour was because its ticket sales were poor, promoter Brent Eccles confirmed to TimeOut, adding that the scale of the tour proved too ambitious.

However, there are plans for Moa - who has been warming a lot of television studio couches lately to promote the shows but cancelled her appearance on The Panel tonight - to tour nearer summer.

Thanks to NZHERALD for this story.
