The New Zild accent and music Can I get a Yea Yall? No! Posted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:58 pm I just read an Interesting article in Rip it up mag by some guy called Ben Weaver called Can I get a Yes Yall? No! Outlining his aboration of americanised New Zealand Hip Hop.
Well I'm thinking... fair enough Its our accent we should use it. But then again have you ever heard a straight Kiwi or Australian accent on a hip hop track?
Oooh Its a bit rough makes me want to gnaw my ears off.
The other thing that came to mind was why do they always just look at Hip Hop? because its absolutely rife in Rock and Pop also.
If it was good enough for Led Zepelin, and David Bowie, Tom Jones you know British folk who didn't exactly sound like they were singing in cockney accents, why is it not acceptable according to the gate keepers of popular opinion for kiwis to pronounce words in a understandable uniform well pronounced way such as american english. I see it as the universal language of music, its easily understood and well pronounced and can't rhymes with rant which in NZ or English cockney does not. Just an example.
After all Rock n Roll and Hip Hop are both black american in origin and shouldn't realy have anything to do with us down hear at the bottom of the world anyway.
I'm not saying that NZ accents shouldn't be used because they should, but where do we draw the line between 'I cant understand a word your saying because your swallowing all the vowel sounds' and 'you sound like your yankin off'?

RE: The New Zild accent and music Can I get a Yea Yall? No! Posted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:28 pm Bottom line is, if you are proud of your country, your culture and your country's voice, then you will use it when you talk and when you record lyrics/ vocals/ art. If you want to be some cheesy american gangster then you will prefer to hear that.
Why would tom jones sound like a cockney? hes from wales he sounds welsh as.
Imagine Bob Marley, the Streets, Sepultura, the sex pistols or Shihad without their native accents and singing like cheesy north americans. It would sound aweful. |

RE: The New Zild accent and music Can I get a Yea Yall? No! Posted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:44 pm Well Tom Jones is from the UK and doesn't sound particularly UK to me.
You do make some good points but I do not agree that its the bottom line. In fact I dont believe in bottom lines. There's just opinion and opinions are like but holes ..every bodies got one.
But in any case what if your proud of your country but assimilate an accent to show the connection with the origins of the music you are doing. For instance Katchafire songs have a Jamaican thing going on in their sound because they are doing Jamaican music. That doesn't seem any different to hip hop assimilating the sound of authentic New York Rap? Or lets say your in an Irish band that sings Irish ballads in an Irish accent but the musicians are all New Zealanders how does that differ? And hey in saying that shouldn't we have all our songs having a maori strum? Basically we have no original musical culture of our own except maybe maori Kapahaka but even the Maori strum comes from Hawaian Uke players.
Hmm food for thought. |

RE: The New Zild accent and music Can I get a Yea Yall? No! Posted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:27 pm probably an over-simplification but;
the adoption of an "Accent" is akin to persona. the conclusion I draw is that those who are happy to "ape" are more interested in business than music.
The ability to conform to market expectations is of more importance than say...speaking on Local Body Elections or developing a voice on the trumpet. |
