Bingo Fighter - Single Review: Iíve Got Zero Attention

10 Aug 2018 // A review by butch181

Bingo Fighter has released Iíve Got Zero Attention as their debut single. Headed by singer/songwriter Hayden Linney, this short track has a rather British Punk Rock sound, like a less abrasive and sarcastic Sex Pistols.

Lyrically speaking, the song leaves a lot to be desired, with a chorus that is composed of ďIíve got zero attention, Put me in detentionĒ repeated for twenty seconds. With three choruses within this under two-minute song, over half of the track is these two lines repeated. Good from a live standpoint as itís an easy song to sing and chant along with, but from a static listening point of view, it can wear on your patience rather quickly.

With a simple rhyming scheme, the verses come off as basic, which does fit in with the idea of having no attention span, but ultimately feels forced and doesnít quite gel with the instrumentation.

Instrumentally, there is nothing to fault. Iíve Got Zero Attention has a good high pace drum beat, which is consistent throughout, with some deft drum rolls at the end of every bar, a more reclusive sound by switching from the snare to hi-hat in the verses, and a great little build-up in the breakdown. The guitar follows the vocal melody with the odd decorative element added in.

If Punk is the sound that they are going for, then they are well on their way, as the song will work well live; short, sharp, and easy to sing along with. If they are wanting to follow a more melodic direction, then there is a bit more work to be done. There is definite potential for future Bingo Fighter tracks, but the excessive simplicity of Iíve Got Zero Attention, with guitar and vocal melody tracking exactly the same, gives the song a limited shelf-life before you would look to replace it on the playlist.

Corduroy - Single Review: The Usual

Corduroy's The Usual starts with such a smooth sound. A simple leisurely progression chords on the keys, followed by a funky riffage on the guitar that jumps and skips around the track like an excitable puppy out for a walk with its owner.

Bulletbelt - Single Review: Faster Than Death
07 Aug 2018 // by butch181
Their first release since their line-up change and the departure of vocalist Jolene Tempest, Faster Than Death, features the recording debut of new singer Scott Spatcher-Harrison and lead guitarist Josh O'Brien. With these changes, comes a slight change in sound, most noticeably in the vocals, switching from the higher range abrasive style that Tempest was known for, to Spatcher-Harrison naturally low, deep, rolling growls.

Albi and The Wolves - Gig Review: The Great New Zealand Folk Revival @ The Tuning Fork, Auckland 26/07/2018
27 Jul 2018 // by butch181
With local parking shut down due to the overwhelming number of people attending the Dynamo show at Spark Arena, one would expect a light turnout next door at the Tuning Fork. As the show began, with a short unscripted foreword from Chris Dent of Albi and The Wolves, the audience was looking sparse, but this did not dissuade the opening act Ben Dixon.

An early night at Neck of the Woods, with doors open well before 7pm and the night set to end by 10pm. A nice early evening that still leaves the night open for those that like their late nights in town.
