Newmarket’s Lucha Lounge may have a small stage but it made some big noise when God Bows to Math ripped into recreating their new albumBrighter Futures, with a live and loud performance that left the crowd with just enough breath to yell for more! Martin Phillips looked slightly uncomfortable, stooping over slightly to reach his mic, but it didn’t seem to hinder his ability to play his guitar or provide enthusiastic vocals through the set. The trio really know how to rip into their songs with a frenetic energy that is very potent, their songs are a journey from grungy blues, to soaring punk rock thrashing, delivered with a raw hypnotic power that doesn’t quite make you dance but it does make your body move to the beat, especially when they burst into their up-tempo explosions of fast rhythms, full of ballistic drumming from Thomas Morrison and fat grinding bass from Sam Cussen. A special mention must be made to the lead vocals from Martin and backing vocals from Sam which were an amazing relentless mix of husky death growling and melodic singing all delivered with furious expression whilst playing their respective instruments.

Recently I had enjoyed reviewing their album Brighter Futures where I was mightily impressed with the raw power they had digitised, but that was an experience where I could control the volume, now I was exposed to the live sound, and there was no escape from the volume and ferocity of the acoustics of the room, and it was ear splittingly good. My body felt the thrust of the mega bass and drum as they crashed their amplified instruments into us mere mortals, we were transfixed and suitably impressed, their sound demands so much of your attention, the energy they harness can really wind up the tension and take your breath away, as was the case when they finished their set and then tried to go their way to a cheering crowd. It may be good to leave the crowd wanting more but in this case the crowd was not going to let them leave the stage unless they indeed did give them more, and so it was that God Bows to Math bowed to the faithful and delivered one more rock treat for us, and it was good, again.
