Curlys Jewels - No Apostrophe Album Review

20 Jul 2014 // A review by Peter-James Dries

No, there is no grammatical error. As the title of Curlys Jewels first full length album explains, there is no apostrophe, something I must admit, which makes my English degree writhe in its dusty picture frame. But like "Hanah with one N" will attest, if your name doesn't fit the societal norm, you'll spend the rest of your life explaining "it just ain't meant to be there."

No Apostrophe is a back and forward dance between swaying melodic rock with tinge of cowboy blues, and something a lot darker and heavier. It's a sound Fans of Stone Temple Pilots and all good 90s rock will appreciate.

Singer Janelle Pollock's dynamic voice brings some, dare I say, soft, beautiful moments to the album, but she isn't afraid to belt it either, which is a good thing because the band know how and when to bring the hard and heavy. Being a fan of the heavier, I find that these parts are where the band really shine.

The album features the bands single Away For The Weekend, which has been receiving radio play both locally and internationally. I can see it as a crowd favourite sing-along track, if played in front of the right audience.

Also featured is a reworking of All These Signs from their debut, the Fling Flang Flonge EP. Beneath the gloss of a professional mastering job, the rearrangement of this song shows how much the band's sound has developed in the past couple of years.

No Apostrophe is available for purchase or stream from the Curlys Jewels Bandcamp (http://curlysjewels.bandcamp.com/album/curlys-jewels). You can also check out this live performance on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joTkANCs0sc).  It's a couple of years old now, but it still gives a feel of who the band are when they're in their element.

About Curlys Jewels

Curlys Jewels are a rock band from Wellington NZ. Their sound has been described as grungy yet powerfully emotive, pinned together with soaring vocals, dark guitar undertones and a punching rhythm section. The charismatic, colourful and instantly likeable front person, Jel Pollock, draws listeners in with her delightfully unique stage presence and sensational vocal range. Aaron Ludlow (guitar), Andy van der Heyden (bass) and Corey Bell (drums), provide the energetic foundations complimenting Jel, with all members lighting up the stage.

The band has released a number or records over the years enjoying success on the Official NZ Top 40 Charts. The past 3 Curlys Jewels singles were recorded at Roundhead Studios with the legendary producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers) and mixed by Clint Murphy (Devilskin).

Curlys Jewels have supported several heavy weight New Zealand bands such as Head Like a Hole, Devilskin, and toured with The Feelers. They also supported international rock stars Living Colour at their Wellington concert.

Yurt Party - Album Review: Yurt Party
07 Sep 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
It sure isn't summer, and this is really not the Balkans, but Yurt Party’s new self-titled album refutes that. Back with another one of them Balkan rocking beats, Yurt Party’s debut is jazzy, erratic, and full of zest and energetic grooves, with flavour notes of ska, dub, and bergamot.

The New Existentialists - Single Review: Invocation
16 Jul 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
The New Existentialists, a doom metal band known for their dark and atmospheric soundscapes, have just… Wait a minute… No. The New Existentialists are really not a doom metal band, and they’re really not known for their dark soundscapes… They’re more known as stalwarts of a bygone era.

Samuel Philip Cooper - Album Review: Journey to Sobriety
01 Jun 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
Samuel Philip Cooper sits on the brink of social media stardom, with videos of his belting out pop music piano covers from behind a pair of thick spectacles racking up views and likes on Insta. Little do any of the mindless doom scrollers swiping through his reels know, but percolating behind his eye brows is the very key to their very salvation.
