Superturtle - Beat Manifesto LP Review

27 May 2013 // A review by tonymcdonald

All I can say is "Wow!". Since receiving the LP Beat Manifesto for review I have played it constantly. What caught my attention immediately was the driving bass lines, very reminiscent of one of my favourite bass players; Les Pattinson from Echo and the Bunnymen. At times I wondered about the singing, was he trying to sound like David Bowie or was it his natural style? Then I thought "who cares, it's great either way".

There is not one song that lets this album down, just buy it, trust me. The drums at time sound weird, certain snare fills off time, etc... But this all adds to the bands feel.

It is not a new sound and could easily have been released in the late 80s, and for me that's a good thing.

There are no huge guitar solos, or 8 minute songs. It's pure alternative/indie passion. I'm not sure if they'd be good live, but I will find out at my first opportunity.

We don't usually give scores for albums at Muzic.net.nz but if we did, this would be 9/10. Nice!

New Zealand’s very own Blink 182, Elemeno P, with support from Fruit Juice Parade and Valentina hit San Fran, on a fantastic warm Wellington evening. It was packed out; beers were flowing, and the sticky smell of the low-ceilinged venue was absolutely buzzing.

Even during a period of uncertainty in New Zealand with Covid-19, Devilskin and support act Shepherds Reign managed to fill San Francisco Bath House in Wellington. In fact, I have not seen a queue outside on the street for quite some time.
