Horror Story @ The Royal 18/08/12

02 Sep 2012 // A review by terry666

What can I say about horror punk maestros Horror Story? Well for starters I love this band. They always put on a great live show and expect the unexpected. I had heard that this could possibly be their last swamp show so was quite sad about that but knew this was one show I did not want to miss and I pray that this wasn’t the last time I will see them. The band had also announced that because this was going to be a special show they were bringing their old drummer Craig Psycho back for the first half of the set so I was pretty excited about the whole event.

Last time they played Palmy they didn’t have the ghoul paint and I was a little let down by that but this time they came prepared. Sorry but in my opinion that’s part of what I like about them is the paint, the cloths and of course the death lock made famous by the Misfits whom incidentally they opened for on a tour of New Zealand some years ago.

The first half of their set was a walk through material of the past playing classics like Return of the living dead, Angelique and Devil girl from mars. Craig Psycho was on drums for most of the set before they bought out their new drummer Jackal Mayhem playing some tracks off their new album “This Graveyard Earth”. As usual with Horror Story you have to expect the unexpected and when the new drummer got tired they were about to leave the stage. Thanks to a quick thinking crowd member he put up his hand and said he would do a song with them and we got Angelique all over again was brilliant and something I don’t think you would see too often. With three drummers in one set that has got to be pushing for a record somewhere.

It was with great sadness they left the stage but there was still a twinkle in my eye and a smile on my face having enjoyed one of New Zealand’s great hidden talents. With a huge back catalogue this is a band all lovers of loud music should track down and listen to and even better get to a show if you get the chance because it’s an experience you won’t forget. If you missed them you really missed out on a treat. They are also bloody generous buggers too giving their latest album away for free on the interweb at http://www.horror-punks.com/.

The Hamma play an old school energy driven raw rock n roll with a heavy metal edge. They formed around 1984 and their sound is very reminiscent of that era.

I had been lucky enough to witness 8 Foot Sativa in Auckland opening for Fear Factory just a few weeks before they started their nationwide comeback tour. It was an impressive show which left no doubt in people's minds that 8 Foot was back stronger than ever and ready to shred it across the country once again.

This is an amazing heavy death metal album coming from a band hailing from the swamp; Palmerston North. Depths have been touring hard nationally to brand their name into the metal scene and have just ventured overseas to test the waters.
