2012 brings the release of one of the biggest albums of the year, from one of our biggest named DJ’s ironically called DJ CXL. The album features local artists including Scribe, J Williams, K.One, Sidney Diamond and Erakah, CXL said that “all those guys, they are my mates. At some point or another I’ve worked with them – played their backing music at live shows, or just met them through gigs and stuff. It was actually really great to have all these dudes at my fingertips and be able to call them and say 'I’m doing an album, you guys keen to jump on one of my tracks? Once I had finished the album, seeing all the names I thought 'oh there are quite a few cool dudes on here.” He is absolutely right, there are some huge names in the NZ music industry on his Album. But in all honesty even without those big names DJ CXL’s debut album would have been every bit as good. From the first single ‘Number one’ to the most recent single released ‘Let’s just celebrate’ the production is tight, the music is solid and the melodies are sweet.
Every song is different and tells of different journeys of DJ CXL and his path to greatness, although none of them allude to his roots as a Heavy Metal Drummer. Maybe that should be his next collaboration; Six60 or Kora would be my choice!
Right now your choice should be to go out and get this CD it is brilliant!
One of Aotearoa’s most well rounded DJ’s whether he’s in a battle, club, studio or live on stage you can be sure DJ CXL will bring the heat. DJ CXL was NZ DMC Champ in 2003 & went on to get a top 12 placing in the world finals in London. He has cuts & scratch breaks on a stack of NZ Hip Hop albums from DJ Sir-Vere’s 'Major Flavours' series to the Breakinwreckwordz album to Ardijah.
DJ CXL is also part of the Ill Semantics crew and is currently in the studio with them working on a new album.
In addition to having a number of TV appearances he has also played as a support DJ for a bunch of International acts performing in New Zealand including 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, RZA & Destiny’s Child. As well as all that DJ CXL has two weekly radio slots spinning live on air for Base FM 107.3 Tuesdays 4pm – 6pm & Flava FM 96.1 on Saturdays from 10pm – 12pm and also plays weekly at clubs in Auckland City.
