High on Fire and The Melvins Gig Review

10 Mar 2011 // A review by terry666

High on Fire and The Melvins - 23/02/2011 - Bodega, Wellington

The Melvins and High on Fire were checking in at Christchurch Airport when the Earthquake hit. You have to secretly wonder whether it was the show these guys did the night before that triggered it because they were definitely off the Richter scale for their delayed Wellington show.

Because of the delay there were no support acts so it was straight in to the co headliner High on Fire who gave us a lesson in Stoner Metal. These guys are a three piece but still have a very full sound. Matt Pike was like a demon shredding on his guitar and spewing forth in a guttural growl. These guys play epic long tracks that keep the pit moving. They have been around for over a decade but I have only just started listening to them myself and feel as though I have been missing out for so long so it was time for a catch up lesson. They started with an old track but were quickly showing off material from their entire career finishing off with the ripper track 'Snakes For The Divine' the title track off their latest album. Talking to people before the show they were very excited to see these guys and I was amongst them on that one and man were we treated. All too fast it was over and we were awaiting King Buzzo.

The Melvins are a storm. There were two drummers to start with and then King Buzzo himself. I’ve loved his work with Fantomas and seen him once a few times with them and once before with the Melvins but that did not prepare me for this show. These guys were unbelievable and the crowd went mental for them. These guys play Sludge Metal with a Stoner Rock twist with got the crowd rocking. They create a wall of sound that pulsates and punches you in the nose occasionally. They played a lot off their new album but still gave us some of their classics like 'Blood Witch' and 'Eye Fly’s'. These guys blew the crowd away. The sound from the two drummers was insane and King Buzzo’s guitar was out of this world. Jared the bass player was dressed as the space man and it looks like he is trying to grow an afro like the King himself. Like High on Fire their set was way too short. Let’s hope the earthquake didn’t scare them off and that we get to see them back here again soon because this show was awesome beyond words.

Gig Review: Judas Priest @ Spark Arena, Auckland - 16/03/2019
18 Mar 2019 // by terry666
It was a very sad day when Ozzy Osbourne had to cancel his New Zealand tour, but it came with a silver lining. We had one Judas Priest show, turning them from being a support slot to full headliners.

ATU's Point of View is an instrumental EP mainly focused on the guitar but written, performed, recorded and mastered in its entirety by ATU. It has an amazing cover, which in itself asks a question.

Gig Review: Queen and Adam Lambert @ Spark Arena, Auckland - 17/02/2018
18 Feb 2018 // by terry666
I was a very excited man as I headed towards Spark Arena in Auckland, for what is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest rock bands, Queen and Adam Lambert. Now purists would say it’s not Queen without Freddie, but it's worth going to see the show before making judgements.

Spook The Horses - Album Review: People Used To Live Here
07 Dec 2017 // by terry666
Atmospheric bordering on doom is what encapsulates this somewhat gloomy affair. This has previously been described as post metal, and there is a lot of darkness but this is in by no means a metal release and it wanders down the path of alternative music in my mind.
