The Alphabetchadupa Album Review

30 Nov -0001 // A review by Shade
Mellow and smooth are two words that describe this album and Betchadupa's lyrics perfectly. This album is ideal for those moments when you just want to chill out.

Betchadupa won 'Best Pop/Rock Release' for this album at the B.Net Music Awards, 2002, 'Top New Act' at the 2001 NZ Music Awards, have received nominations in the Juice TV Awards and the Squeeze People Choice Awards, were finalists in the 2002 APRA Silver Scroll Awards, and have performed at the 2000 and 2002 Big Day Outs. Bigger and better things seem to be on the way for Matt, Liam, Joe & Chris.

What more can be said about this entertaining group of four young men? This is an impressive debut album, and one which is recommended not only by myself, but by many others.

About Betchadupa

Betchadupa is an Auckland rock band that is fronted by Neil Finn's son Liam. Betchadupa was formed in the late 90s, around the nucleus of second-generation rock musicians Matt Eccles and Liam Finn.

The two formed a musical partnership in their early teens that, with the addition of friends Garland and Bramley, has resulted in two fine EP's and a top 10 NZ album for the Flying Nun label. After some top gigs in NZ and Australia throughout 2002/3 inlcuding an Australian tour with Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age, the band has potentially moved to the US market and they also performed at a showcase gig at the 2003 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

Formerly known as Lazy Boy, they released the single 'Brighter Sound' on the soundtrack to the Australian movie 'Cut', before changing their name to Betchadupa.

Eqwanox @ The Royal, PN - 12 June 2010
28 Jun 2010 // by Shade
I had the absolute pleasure of being invited along to see Eqwanox perform live at The Royal in Palmerston North on 12 June 2010, and I was more than impressed with the Waikato boys tight and epic performance. Not only were their songs inspirational, with lyrics that many of us could relate to, but what I saw that night was so compelling and memorable, I find myself wanting to tell the world about them.

Mercury Crowe - Set Your Mind To Fly Album Review
08 Jun 2009 // by Shade
Mercury Crowe are a straight-ahead rock band. They are straight ahead, though, not in that their songs lack inventiveness or freshness, but in the sense that they clearly just want to write good tunes.

"True story: I received this five-song EP before Christmas, played it a bit then put on the "get to" pile -which meant it was ignored in the Christmas shuffle. The other day I pulled it out to enjoy again and post this week when an e-mail arrived from this Auckland singer-songwriter asking (politely) if I might be interested in writing about it.

The Black Seeds - 'Into The Dojo'
12 Nov 2006 // by Shade
With their third studio album released recently, The Black Seeds have definitely made an impact in the New Zealand music scene. Established in the sound of roots and dub - more so the latter - Into The Dojo consists of The Black Seeds’ essence however it is refined to a smoother, crisper sound.

Some weeks ago I mentioned having seen the group Dukes of Leisure play at the Auckland Observatory Skydome. On the same bill was Salon Kingsadore, also enjoying an appropriately spacey venue for music that took off on instrumental astral flights.

Hard, raw and dark. The impressive sound that is Agent will leave you feeling satisfied, but you will still want to hear more.
