Kieran Cooper Newsletter Interview

12 Jul 2011 // An interview by Shade

What can we expect to see from you over the next year?
More gigs. A little later on in the year the release of my second album 'Yes, No, Sincerely' and a music video, then I'll get some touring in to promote the album.

What will your next release be?
'Yes, No, Sincerely' is my second solo album and is more organic sounding than the first. My first album was kinda schizophrenic. I'm looking forward to releasing this one, probably around October at this stage.

Who would you most like to support live?
There are lots of awesome NZ artists I'd like to support, especially with my band Kasium, but for solo gigs I couldnt imagine anything better than gigging with Kristin Hersh. She's truely amazing.

How do you describe your music?
A mix of some of the music I love to listen to at the moment. Plus, I'm not really a 'good' singer, I have a strange voice and I think that adds something. I really like hearing that 'something different' when I listen to music, so I try to let that out in my songwriting. Billy Corgan is an example of that, he's been a huge inspiration to me.

What is the best part of being a musician?
Making something outa nothing. Creativity for creativity's sake. Then when you write some songs that sound good and mean a lot to you it really gets good. The bonus is when other people enjoy it in their own way too. It's a great feeling. You've shared something powerful because music is very powerful to a lot of people.

What is in your CD collection at home?
Loads of Smashing Pumpkins and Kristin Hersh. Loads of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Theres lots in between from Slayer to The Demiwhores to Dave Brubeck Quartet! Im collecting NZ music now, theres so much good stuff out there.

What inspired you to become a musician?
It's always been there. I been singing since I can remember. Nothing has ever moved me as much as music. I remember seeing an electric guitar for the first time when I was 3-4. That was a life changing moment even then, I knew what I wanted to do!

How do you keep in contact with your fans?
It's really easy with social networking. Just check out my list of links haha.

About Kieran Cooper

New Zealand based songwriter Kieran Cooper has released two albums and one free-download 'live in studio' album

Kierans solo career started with his self produced 2011 release 'In Search Of Reason'. The album is somewhat schizophrenic with rich acoustic guitars one minute, pounding rhythm's and fuzz laden guitar leads the next. It was received warmly by music critics:

"There’s so much I want to say about ‘Over me’, but there are so few words that could do the track justice. It is a truly beautiful work, but not in any conventional sense. It’s dark and cynical... listen to the words, like really listen."
